ATHLETIC PRE-PARTICIPATION PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS
Athletic pre-participation physical examinations will be held at West High on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 starting at 6:00 p.m. for athletes who will be in grades 7 – 12 next year. The exams are offered to any student-athlete who plans to participate in athletics in the Iowa City Community School District or at Regina next year. Students may opt to obtain an exam from their physician and submit the form completed by their doctor instead of attending these exams.
Complete information and forms will be available at each school, on the district website or by calling Jennifer McHenry, Health Specialist, at 688-1000. Students MUST bring a completed Athletic Medical Information Form, signed by a parent or guardian to the exam. They will not be admitted without this completed form.
ATHLETIC PHYSICAL EXAM FORM
These exams are for those students who will participate in interscholastic athletics. COPIES OF THESE EXAMS WILL NOT BE MADE FOR OTHER SPORTS EVENTS (CAMPS, ETC.).
Overview
Healthy children are optimal learners. The district health services staff works with students, families, staff and the community to ensure that children's health needs are met so that they can attend school and be healthy and ready to learn. The occurrence of health conditions affecting our students is similar to occurrence nationwide. The district has students with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, genetic syndromes, immune disorders, heart problems, asthma, other respiratory problems, seizures, severe food allergies, ADHD, etc. Mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse also affect an increasing number of students.
The district employs a director of health services and five full-time school nurses who provide nursing coverage to all buildings and off-site programs. The buildings are divided between the nurses so that the nurse can be a member of the building team and provide continuity of services to students. Building secretaries and health paraeducators administer medications and provide first aid to students. One-on-one health paraeducators provide direct care to students with more severe health conditions and physical limitations. The nurses provide staff training and ongoing supervision of all staff delivering health services. They provide mandated staff trainings, such as medication administration, bloodborne pathogen and mandatory child abuse reporter training. The nurses respond to emergency situations in buildings and provide advanced first aid. The nurses also provide direct nursing care to specific students, care coordination, health record maintenance, and health promotion across the district.
Substitute nurses assist the full-time nurses in provision of services. A floating health paraeducator fills in for other health paraeducators across the district when needed. Health services staff are involved in community and county collaborative efforts related to the health of our students and families.
The district also employs two certified athletic trainers who oversee and provide athletic trainer services to junior and high school athletes and coaches. Students from the University of Iowa athletic trainer program do clinical rotations in the high schools under the direction of the athletic trainers.
